New decision from the EU Commission.
The EU Commission agreed to extend the the application of identity checks at the borders launched by Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany and Austria in 2015. According to the Commission’s decision, the application was extended for another 3 months.
The EU Commission has decided to extend the application of border control between the Schengen region countries implemented at the end of 2015 in 5 EU member countries. According to this ruling, the controls that limit the free movement rule in the Schengen area, will continue for another 3 months.
“We are making great efforts to be able to return to a normally functioning of Schengen region as soon as possible,” said Frans Timmerman, Vice President of the EU Commission, “but we have made great progress on this issue, but we have not reached that point yet.”
Dimitris Avramopoulos, Commissioner for Migration, Internal Affairs and Citizenship of the EU Commission, “We recommend that some border in the Schengen area continue the coordinated, proportional, strictly controlled internal border control”.
