In Germany, the model of citizenship that will affect millions of German citizens of Turkey origin is being discussed. The Christian Democratic Union Party (CDU), headed by the ruling Merkel, has decided to remove dual citizenship. If the decision passes from the German Parliament, the “option model” will be in effect again and those who have dual citizenship will have to choose one of citizenships.
In his statement to the “Münchner Merkur” newspaper, Friedrich said that “If we give four million people right for dual citizenship, they will stay as permanent Turkish minority in Germany”.
Friedrich noted that the model proposed as “static citizenship” is looked suspiciously and noted that “in the option model” there is positive attitude to extend the age to 30 from 23 for young people to make a decision for citizenship.
THEY SHOULD CHOOSE ONE OF THE CITIZENSHIPS
In the “stationary citizenship” model, the citizens of the two countries are aiming to benefit from the citizenship of the each country, while in the “option model” foreign young people born in Germany are forced to choose between German citizens and their parents’ citizenship until the age of 23.
